You don't want to miss these beautiful soul sisters this Thursday at the Fox Theater. Although their music is based in R&B, their ability to blend Jazz, Hip Hop, Funk and Reggae has garnered them respect in many musical circles. If you have not heard the song "J'veux d'la musique", check it out on Les Nubians' Myspace page .
Their socially conscious lyrics and performances has led to collaborations with like minded musicians, Talib Kweli, Black Eyed Peas, Guru, Black Thought of The Roots, Manu Dibango and many more. Although they have been singing most of their lives, Les Nubians' success came after releasing their album, Princesses Nubiennes nearly ten years ago. The album was embraced generously in America, becoming America's most successful French-language album in more than a decade. Their song "J'veux d'la musique" has earned them a Grammy nomination and they are featured on the compilation album In The Name Of Love: Africa Celebrates U2.
Les Nubians consists of sisters, Helene and Celia Faussart, who were
born in France to a French father and a Cameroonian mother. At an
early age they moved to Africa for seven years before moving back to
France,
when they began their musical career singing in a cappella group that
specialized in covers of R&B, reggae, and African songs. Inspired
by a meeting backstage with jazz singer Abbey Lincoln, telling them
"the greatest thing in the world is to be a singer!", they started to
write their own songs, and developing their unique sounds, bringing
together the music of a wide range of cultures and generations.
"Everywhere we went, we looked for music that spoke of the local
culture," says Helene.
According to Celia, "Music is a great way to transmit a cultural
background. Making this record was, in part, a way for our generation
to give tribute to musicians we've looked up to and see that their
music gets the recognition it deserves."
Some of their influences are Miriam Makeba, Ella Fitzgerald, the
Fugees, Fela Kuti("we loved Fela since we were babies!"), and Jazzie B
of Soul II Soul.
