| Description/Bio: | CONSCIOUS ALLIANCE - History Since inception in 2002, we have successfully collected and distributed over 500,000 pounds of non-perishable food donations to local food pantries and impoverished communities across the United States, through our collaborations with musicians such as String Cheese Incident, STS9, Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh and many others. In addition, we successfully built a much needed food storage and distribution facility on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The unit is used to store and distribute emergency food supplies to more than 100 families at the end of each month when bills are due and emergency food is critical in making it to the next month. The Conscious Alliance began as one young, college student’s vision and drive to help others. It all started when Justin Baker, founder and executive director of The Conscious Alliance, mobilized a group of friends and fellow students to come together as food drive volunteers. Baker’s vision led him to host campus-wide food drives with the hopes of not only collecting and distributing food to impoverished Indian Reservations in the Western United States, but also to raise awareness around the fact that poverty that still exists on American Indian Reservations today. The vision didn’t stop there. From campus to concerts, Justin Baker quickly discovered that it would greatly benefit the cause to appeal to a larger audience. Music concerts were just the venue he needed to capture a larger audience in one place at one time. Concerts proved to be a success. There were greater food and fundraising opportunities given the welcomed support of generous concertgoers. Today, The Conscious Alliance VISION is bigger than ever. We hope to continue to inspire high school and college students to become more actively involved in their communities by participating in and hosting food drives for people in need. Using food drives as our medium, we hope to encourage leadership and inspire community participation by young people across the country. In the meantime we have harnessed the momentum behind our cause to expand into disaster relief efforts. When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, we were able to respond within days, calling upon our network of supporters and musicians to come together to raise aid. Though generous donations and a series of food drives with Dave Matthews Band we were able to personally deliver over 30,000 pounds of food and almost $100,000 that was used to purchase more food. We have realized our potential to get food to those most in need, and will continue with this area of relief when disaster strikes. It is our goal to collect and distribute one million pounds of food to America’s hungry both in cities and on impoverished American Indian Reservations. Once we reach that goal, we hope to collect and distribute one million pounds of food per year every year thereafter. We are confident we can reach our goal! CONSCIOUS ALLIANCE - Mission The Mission of the Conscious Alliance is to: • Distribute food and resources to communities most in need. • Educate people about hunger, sustainability, and the issues facing American Indian Communities. • Create service-learning opportunities for youth on American Indian Reservations. • Facilitate the sustainable development of American Indian communities • Mobilize resources for first response disaster relief. I wanted to take a moment and extend our gratitude to you and all those involved in your generous donation(s) for our clients and community in need! We are humbled and honored at your generosity. With much appreciation and respect, Kelly Klovas Prevention Coordinator/ and all I can help with :) Albuquerque Indian Center Roatan Children's Fund It was so nice to get to meet all of you last Sunday. I wish I could have spent more time with each of you and learned more about you and your history of giving back thought the Jam Cruise. I have been working on the Island for about 5 years now and thought I was past all the tears but have to say that when we pulled up in the van and I saw all the kids so connected with the music, I had a hard time holding back the tears. I know these kids and have watched them grow for the last few years and what I witnessed was just magical. If I may just tell you a little about 14 year old Alex. He is the oldest boy at the Home and has been there since he was a toddler. As he has gotten older he has become more withdrawn and harder to reach. When we drove up he was the first one of the kids that I saw. He was standing on the table completely immersed in the music and had this wonderful smile on his face, a smile that I had not witnessed in years. The House Father Mark and I were both so pleased to see him so involved. I took Alex aside after and he was just so excited and we talked a little about maybe music could be a calling for him. I'm sure that the kids will be talking about that day for a long time to come. Actually, I think a lot of us will be talking about that day. Thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. I hope you had a wonderful time. Please consider coming back soon! Lynn Fanelli www.roatanchildrensfund.com Alameda County Community Food Bank Conscious Alliance was a dream to work with. We had never partnered with them before, but their reputation with San Francisco Food Bank was stellar so we were excited to work with them. Evan was especially great, as he coordinated all logistics and communicated information well in advance. We were astonished when the truck pulled into our warehouse with almost 3,500 pounds of food for the benefit of the hungry in Alameda County. We welcome the opportunity to work with Conscious Alliance in the future! Angela Eichner Food Drive Coordinator Made With Love Cafe Among our major donors, Conscious Alliance stands out as our most dedicated ally. In November of 2005, when Emergency Communities began planning its first independent relief mission, a kitchen and distribution center in a suburb abutting the lower 9th ward of New Orleans, Conscious Alliance was there. Houston Food Bank Food Bank I send you thanks from the Houston Food Bank. Even though it has been several months since you were here, you are always in our thoughts and prayers. We will never forget all of the work you did to help with disaster relief in the Houston area. Chief Albert Mr. Baker, you have made many people happy this last Thanksgiving. I even seen a few tears. One man told me thank you, thank you many times, but he told me, I don't have a stove. Yesterday, I bought him a stove. He didn't have a hot water heater, but he has one now. It's people like you that makes it possible for these poor people to survive. I know it's impossible for you to see the faces of these people when they got the food that you provide for them. I won't try to explain, because I can't, all I can tell you. it's a very warm feeling. It was late at night when I finish delivering the turkeys and the food items, I got ate up by mosquitos and I was tired, but it was all worth it. I also talked to the local supermarket and he is willing to do all he can to help the local get their food. If you are still willing to help us on a monthly basis, then let me know and I can put you in contact with him. Again many blessing to you and you organization. Best Regards; Chief Albert Marlene Foret I wanted to thank you for the turkeys, can goods, potato, carrots, apples, bananas, and sweet potato you generosity gave to the people in Grand Caillou/ Dulac and the other communities. Please tell everyone involved in giving and an extra thanks to you for delivering all the goods. Marlene Foret Chairperson of Grand Caillou / Dulac Community Natalie and Floyd Hand When we first met Justin Baker, he was a young college student studying theology. He came to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on a spiritual mission. But he left here with a new mission...to improve the lives of our Oglala Lakota people. With an estimated 80% unemployment rate, the majority of our members' food consumption is from government issue commodities. This food, mostly canned and packaged goods, contain high amounts of fat, sodium, and carbohydrates. As a result, over 1/3 of our 36,000 members are diabetic. And without employment, many of our families here run out of food by mid-month. Since Justin founded The Conscious Alliance, he has been committed to providing a healthy alternative to the fatty, starchy food provided here. The Conscious Alliance partnered with our Looks For Buffalo Foundation, has distributed food to create thousands of healthy meals across the Pine Ridge Reservation. They have also become a huge supporter of our annual Thanksgiving "Turkey 'N Trimmings" program and the Christmas Toy Drive program. With help from the Conscious Alliance, we distributed over 700 turkey baskets for Thanksgiving and over 1,000 new, wrapped Christmas presents to needy children (0-18 yrs.) in 2004!!!! Additionally, The Conscious Alliance collects and delivers good quality used clothing which benefits so many families here. And through their fundraising efforts, The Conscious Alliance is generously donating a 22'x22' heated garage that will be designated for food/clothing distribution here on our homeland! This garage will allow Justin and his team to bring larger quantities of donations to be staged and distributed here. We are so grateful for The Conscious Alliance and their unwavering support for our Oglala Lakota people! And too the thousands that support his work, we say... lila wopila tanka! (thank you very much) Floyd & Natalie Hand Looks For Buffalo Foundation Pine Ridge, South Dakota Steve Lilly Steve is the tribal leader of the Wadopana Clan in Montana. Please read what he had to say about Justin and Evan Baker delivering a truckload of your donated goods to his reservation. Justin, Your Indian Brother in Montana . . . just checking in my friend to see how things are going. Also, a big "thanks you" goes out to Justin and Evan from the Wadopana Clan for all that you have done. We served approximately 150 families. There were an average of (3) members per family. So you touched the lives of 450 individuals. "You know it sure makes a difference when you know somebody cares". One elderly woman testified to that, when she approached me after she had received her basket of food. She said, "you know, I didn't know how I was going to feed my grandchildren this week - thank you." Jacob Devaney Living Folklore, Inc. www.livingfolklore.com |
