The Basics Fund exists to raise funds to pay for artists' health insurance while simultaneously promoting their work. The organization was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation on 5/21/07, immediately after it organized and funded a promotional tour for its first two artists, Jonson Kuhn (playwright, fiction author), and Eliza Boote (singer/songwriter). The tour was called, The Midwest Travels of Cowgirl Boote and Her Bitter Buffalo, and it headlined venues in Denver, Boulder, Lawrence, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Omaha, and Lincoln.

These artists were chosen for sponsorship, not only because their work is amazing and original, but also because they live lifestyles of poverty, minimalism, experience, and constant involvement in their respective artistic communities. As a result of their devotion, they have not had the time or interest to take career-type jobs that would have provided them with health insurance as a benefit. The Basics Fund, believes that these lifestyles are romantic as shit, and that they are part of what inspires great art, and that the people who give up everything to live them, should be provided, at the very least, with some peace of mind regarding their physical well-being (i.e. health insurance).

Since that first tour, The Basics Fund has begun an unusual fund raising campaign, involving a 39' coach bus that has been completely remodeled with couches, bunks, tables, and of course, a keg. The Basics Fund's "Worland Wariors" bus parties have become notorious for being the most dopenastiest way to travel from Boulder or Denver to pretty much any concert, or art-related event in the country.*

*note: sometimes we have overflow, or the WW bus is in the shop, during these times, the party will still rage on, just on another bus or something.

This year, the bus has taken members and donors to Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, most of the Santa Fe Art District's First Friday Art Walks, Art in The City After Parties, The Denver Art Museum's Final Friday Art Party ("Untitled"), Cafe Nuba, Most of the Red Rocks concerts, Fillmore Concerts, and even a couple of football games. Next year, we plan on doing more out of state events, and multiple day excursions to music and arts festivals.

Once the bus is running at its full potential (i.e. 20-25 people per event, 20 days per month, at $25-$40 donations/ passenger--depending on the destination), The Basics Fund will be able to pay for the health insurance policies of between 20 and 30 artists at a time. And once we have achieved that foundation, we can expect a lot of interest from philanthropic donors.

In other words, go to the boulderpm.com events calendar, or to the events calendar at www.thebasicsfund.org to figure out which events the bus is hitting up, and then donate to reserve spots for you and your croo. Or, if you've got a bunch of people who all want to go to an event that is not on the calendar, send an email to dustin@thebasicsfund.org, with the information, and we'll see if we can make it happen.

In addition, to getting people where they are going in style, some of the side benefits include:

*Cutting down on drunk driving
*Saving the Earth through the power of buspooling (plus, we are also trying to raise money to convert to biodiesel and veggie oil by the spring of 2008, so if you have money, and you care about that kind of thing, please get in touch with us)
*Opportunity to purchase our artists' work

The Basics Fund is the most innovative, inspirational, and rockin' organization out there for artists! Without their help, the great adventures of "the Midwest travels of Cowgirl Boote and her Bitter Buffalo"(cited above) would never have taken place!! Thanks to The Basics Fund my buddy Jonson and I were given the opportunity to live our dreams of going on tour, playing music, writing stories, and sharing them with others throughout the country. Not only were we secured with a place to stay in every city we visited, but we were also hooked up with venues we never imagined we would play! Not to mention, that before we hit the road, we were set up with some sweet health insurance (and god knows what kind of financial hole we would have been in without it seeing as Jonson is a walking health hazard!)
All in all, I don't think you could find a more dedicated or supportive non-profit for the artist!

Where do I start?

Its hard to say, The Basics Fund fires on all... errr, how many cyliners does the bus have anyway?

Whatever, it fires on all of them, like an
afternoon roadtrip cruise in a mint 70's Cutlass Supreme, gliding along under cloudless blue American spring skies.

Only better! Add a dozen or so of your closest friends (if they arent already they're sure to become so), a keg of beer, a couple of loungy couches, the coolest bus driver in existence - forget everything you learned on the schoolbus in highschool - a fantastic way to support your local culture (having fun at the same time) and the event destination of your choice. You cant go wrong, its the best party you've ever been to!

I had the pleasure of living on the bus for a week as we road tripped to Manchester, TN for the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and must say it will go down in the books as one of the best weeks I've had. Its a crazy fun way to meet other cool people, travel, and party safely. There's really no adequate way to describe it, just book your trip and find out for yourself.

My only words of caution? Its addictive. There's a good chance that you will afterwards sell all your belongings, loosen the convention ties of the mundane and persue the true bohemian dream! Check it out!

First, its a bus, and that alone makes it dope as hell. Then you add in the fact that it is providing society a great social nutrient and providing you some absolutely funkatronic good times and well, damn... But if you need more, consider the fact that you're helping both the social and ecological environment of Colorado. Still not enough? I've ridden on this bus to many local shows and even lived out of this bus at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival. I have loved every second of every adventure. I get on the bus and I know I am in for a great time. When was the last time you were on a bus like that? Do it, its cool as hell and you know this.
